Book review - One for the Money

One for the Money
Janet Evanovich

Photobucket

Honestly? I didn't like it. I know everyone raves about Evanovich, ahd she's hit the best seller list like a billion times, but this book just didn't do it for me. I started reading it for my chick lit/romance book club (whee!) and got about half way through before I realized I really wasn't interested in this character!

Stephanie Plum, the female lead, wasn't necessarily poorly created. She was rather realistic, could stand on her own two feet, knew what it was like to not have any groceries in her fridge. She's been screwed over by a man, had an annoying mother, and was all too aware of the fact that finding a job is next to impossible right now.

But then she became a bounty hunter? (A.k.a someone who goes out and picks up people who miss their court dates.) I don't think so. That's a pretty extreme job for someone who's never done it before. Which, I guess, is proved since she is constantly throwing herself into dangerous situations and almost getting her ass kicked, then being saved by former lover Joe Morelli who is the one guy she's looking for.

I just didn't care about Stephanie. I didn't care about all the things she was trying to do, all the people she met. The only semi-interesting thing I could enjoy was the sexual tension between Stephanie and Joe, and even that wasn't nearly as good as it should have been. I've read better. Roarke and Eve in the Eve Dallas mysteries? Yes please.

[info]pinkplasticlove had suggested switching the book club book to Undomestic Goddess by Sophia Kinsella, which is actually really good. (I've already read it, but I wouldn't mind reading it again.) I am in favor of this.

This book got 2 out of 5 stars.

An Ode to Julia Quinn

Oh, Julia Quinn, how I love you.
I love how you make me proud to be a romance reader/writer.
I love the way your romances are never really straight forward. And never do you use the words "heaving bosoms."
I love how all your covers are normal, unassuming ones with objects, but then on the inside you've got the traditional man-clutching-woman picture, just because sometimes its fun to look at it and laugh.

Most importantly, I love the fact that when I started to read your books, I couldn't stop. I started binge reading for the first time in a long time, and it felt damn good.

So thanks, Julia. You really rock my socks off.

books >>>> life

I finished up the copy of Being Nikki by Meg Cabot.  I didn't much care for the first book in that bit, Airhead, but I thought Being Nikki was much better! And of course it ended on a cliffhanger, so now I really want the third one to come out. But it won't, for like a year. Grrrr.

I love that feeling of excitement and stabs of happiness I get when reading a book. I guess I haven't had much experience in the men department, but I still wonder if a man will ever make me feel that giddy and excited, the way I get when I'm reading a cute scene in a book. Particularly a cute scene in a Meg Cabot book.
Next up on the reading list is Every Boy's Got One. I've read it before, a long while ago, but I am in the mood. And frankly it's adorable. With the drama that has recently landed in my lap, I could use a little fluff.

Back to reading! Love!

book reviews + my pseudo birthday

Since Mikal is leaving April 24th, and my birthday is not until May 13th, we are going out tonight to this steak place for dinner. They serve Root Beer there. Import it from the states. Along with Mountain Dew. Anyway, it should be good. After this, I won't spend ANY MONEY. I tried to get cheap groceries today, didn't get very many, and my total still came to just under 30 euro. Crap.

Now to the books I read during my London trip:

book reviews. )

Ok, must get ready for dinner!! Love.

book review: World War Z

There isn't much to spoil, really, since there isn't really a plot.
Here it is. World War Z by Max Brooks (son of the amazing director, Mel Brooks.)

World War Z )

The whole reason I am starting my big workout plan this semester?? To prepare for the zombie invasion.
I am also to see what they do with this rumored WWZ movie they have in the works.

Tonight's plans:
-finish work
-make dinner for folks (pasta!)
-go swimming with mom
-be lazy with the wifey

Then tomorrow:
-work 12-4
-chill around Highland till Marta gets off work
-girly night w/ cookies and schnuggles with Marta and Kate! (I'm psyched.)

book review: Eat Pray Love

Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert.

Wow.
Double wow.
This book absolutely rocked me. It was well written, funny, poignant, even educational. But the most important thing was that it made me think. About my life, about what I've been doing wrong, and how I can improve myself.
So many times while reading that book, I stopped and went "Oh my God! That's me! Right there!" and then in the next sentence, she would tell me how she fixed that problem, how she was able to improve herself. It was incredibly inspiring. I've taken many of the self-improving personal habits she aquired while traveling, and adopted them into my own life.

It actually made me want to become spiritual. (Not religious, mind you. Spiritual.) Its something I can't obviously switch on, and it may not be something in me that I'm capable of achieving. But it inspired me to go to yoga!! Which I think I am going to do again on Monday. And I'm going to try and go to the one at school this coming semester.

I've never had a book inspire me to do things. Or make me feel like a better, more open person just by reading it. Obviously, I won't run off to Italy/India/Indonesia to try and find myself like Elizabeth Gilbert did (although Ireland isn't out of the question...) but there are things I want to do in the here and now.

So read this book. Ladies will probably enjoy it more, since its written from the perspective of a woman) but lads, you might like it as well. Scott, especially you should read this, since you read more books than anyone I know.

Happy reading!
